Something to sing about at Sandon House

Date published: 07 November 2018

When local people popped along to Sandon House Community Centre on Taylor Street, Heywood last week for luncheon, they had a bit extra on the menu in the shape of the nine-strong Bury Veterans Male Voice Choir.

They were just the latest in a long line of entertainments put on by Sue Coates and the volunteers at the Heywood-based community centre. Sandon House is entirely self-funded and relies on grants and contributions from local organisations and by customers for some of the services provided by the centre.

Sue Coats said: “By far and away the most popular thing we do is the Luncheon Club on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. This offers home cooked meals for reasonable prices together with entertainment and activities to promote social inclusion and wellbeing.”

It s not, however, the only thing on offer at the centre and other regular events include art classes, bingo, Zumba, trips to the Lowry Theatre and even a spiritualist class and church meetings.

Last year the women volunteers did their own ‘Calendar Girls’ project with a tasteful ‘nude’ calendar for sale to the public which raised a good amount of badly needed money for the centre.

RBH has been a proud supporter of Sandon House for the past two years as it values the positive impact the centre has on the lives and social wellbeing of people in Heywood.

If you are in the area and fancy a well-priced meal and meeting up with people then why not give the luncheon club (and the other things) a go. Who knows – it could open up a brand new world for you.
