Four-storey extension approved for Rochdale high school

Date published: 04 September 2018

A four-storey extension to a high school in Rochdale was unanimously approved, subject to conditions, by the Planning and Licensing Committee on Monday (3 September).

The extension to Matthew Moss High School will increase its 900-pupil capacity by a third, and provide 10 new teaching spaces, in accordance with Rochdale Borough Council’s need to provide more Year 7 spaces.

It would be constructed in a palette of materials to provide neutral and natural colours using a mixture of cladding, brick and render. Randomly coloured panels are proposed to be introduced into the façade and amongst the glazed windows to add visual interest.

The proposal is also designed to reduce to two-storeys in scale to the rear, to be constructed in distinctive contrasting darker materials.

The car park layout will be reconfigured, and an emergency access route included.

Matthew Moss High School has been contacted for comment.
