Community Iftar takes place in Heywood

Date published: 13 June 2018

An historic first for Heywood took place with the first-ever community Iftar on Sunday evening (10 June).

About 50 people attended the Heywood Community Iftar took place at Sandon House, including the presence of the Mayor Mohammed Zaman, local faith and community leaders, and Heywood residents, both Muslim and non-Muslim.

At sunset, 9.36pm, the day's fast was broken and non-Muslim guests were privileged to be present while their sisters and brothers prayed. Following prayers, all sat down to a splendid meal and the conversation continued, taking the opportunity to engage in conversations about Islam and Christianity, their common features and their differences.

Father Paul Daly, Parish Priest at Our Lady and St. Joseph's parish, who organised the event in partnership with the Mayor, said: “This evening was about building bridges by sharing a meal and good company and conversation. This is how we grow in friendship between faiths and across the Borough. I hope this will be an annual event.”

Dobir Miah said: “This is a historic moment for Heywood as it is the first time Muslims and Christians have got together in this township for a gathering to break fast during the Muslim month of Ramadhan.

“It was really good to see so many people turn up, asking questions, sharing their stories and making friends.  A truly great way to share Ramadhan and our commonalities.

“I hope this will be an annual event and will grow over time to allow people in our borough to learn and understand each other’s faiths better.”
