Charity match to raise funds for rugby players’ treatment

Date published: 11 June 2018

A charity match and auction will take place at Littleborough Rugby Club to raise funds towards treatment and rehabilitation for two of their young players.

The club is aiming to raise funds for Matthew Hayden, 17, and Daniel Roberts, 10.

In the early hours of Saturday morning (2 June), Matthew Hayden and Josh Jones, who play rugby for Littleborough Colts, plus friend Zac Madden, were viciously attacked in Smithy Bridge after they were followed by four men in a dark Nissan Micra.

Two men were arrested following the incident, which is being treated as a hate crime.

Matthew is currently still in hospital with a fractured skull that has led to loss of feeling down his left arm and possible further life-changing injuries. He was due to be moving to America in September to take up a rugby scholarship which he will now no longer be able to partake in and will be off work from his current job for the foreseeable future as he strives to make a full recovery.

Dan Roberts underwent a gruelling 10-hour emergency operation last week to remove a brain tumour, just days before his 10th birthday. He now now requires chemotherapy that starts next week.

A fundraiser to raise £2,000 for Dan and his family was started by his coach, Samuel Dickinson with a link at the bottom of this article. The funds will be used to help his family and contribute towards rehabilitation once Dan has finished his chemotherapy treatment.

The club will have a collection bucket for them on the taster day and will be doing an auction including items like a signed Wigan Warriors signed shirt after a charity match.

A Presidents XV made up of players from across the club play Matthew's Magaluf XV, made up of players from Matthew's Colts side that toured Magaluf in April. The game will kick off at 2pm.

The match will take place at 2pm after the club’s annual taster day at 11am, and the auction will begin at 5pm.
