Broken glass bottle almost killed dog swimming in reservoir

Date published: 11 June 2018

A broken bottle which almost killed a dog whilst swimming in a reservoir has been recovered by United Utilities.

The jagged bottle was recovered from Cowm Reservoir in Whitworth, after a six-year-old otterhound called Trevor slashed his paws and severed an artery and tendon after splashing in the reservoir.

Whitworth Road’s Valley Vet Care conducted an extensive three-hour operation on Trevor, who would not have survived the incident had he been a smaller breed.

A spokesperson for United Utilities, which own the reservoir, said: “This was a very upsetting incident and we’ve since followed up with the dog’s owner who was able to indicate the location where it happened. Our teams made a couple of return trips to see if there was anything obviously dangerous under the water, and they were able to remove a broken bottle which was standing up on end.

“Reservoirs are not for swimming in, either by people or pets, as they get cold and deep very quickly and they could have hidden dangers beneath the surface. Please don’t allow your families or pets to take the risk - enjoy the scenery from the banks, not in the water.”
