Extra equipment for playground damaged by fire

Date published: 11 June 2018

A Norden playground that was damaged by fire is set to receive even more equipment, thanks to the generosity of local residents and councillors.

The popular play area was damaged after arsonists targeted the pirate ship equipment at the Caldershaw play area in April 2017. A full set of replacement play equipment was later installed, costing £24,000.

An additional item called a ‘spica’ – a rotating platform and twisted pole that spin in response to children’s movements – is now in the process of being installed at the play area.

Local resident Paul Ellison, who raised £1,275 towards the ‘spica’ pole, said: “Many thanks to Rochdale Council for installing this. The funds I raised last year will pay for this piece of equipment for all the kids to enjoy.

“Special thanks to Pete White and Helly White from Wellyblobs and Andrea McCarrick from AJ Properties for donating, as well as all the other donations received.”

Councillor Mike Holly has also funded extra equipment within the park, including a snakes and ladders and hopscotch.
