T20 Cricket Match in memory of the late Steve Gartland

Date published: 30 May 2018

A T20 cricket match in memory of the late Steve Gartland was played at Rochdale Cricket Club on Bank Holiday Monday and a good crowd was treated to quality cricket with both bat and ball and raised £760.

The teams, captained by Jack Duffy for Rochdale Cricket Club and Aidy Gleeson, Mayfield Rugby League Club entertained from start to finish.

Rochdale professional Edward Moore knocked up a rapid fifty before sportingly stepping down.

Not to be outdone Mayfield’s replacement professional, Henry Cooper mirrored the feat in an anything you can do type innings.

Cooper was drafted in at short notice when Rochdale Cricket Club chairman Mark Renolds opted to disqualify Mayfield’s original choice of professional on the grounds of, 'well I wanted to win this one'.

Also donning the pads and raising his bat was Ben Ryan Davies, of Hollyoaks and Waterloo Road.

It was a close fought contest which went all the way to the wire but finished in a draw, despite a sterling effort from Ben Ryan Davis who showed he has lost none of the skills he picked up as a youngster at Rochdale.

Donations on the gate, a raffle and a homemade cake sale organised by Kate Gilbertson saw a total on the day of £760 raised for the foundation - it was suggested that most of that came from the sweep on how long it would take Brad Gartland to take his shirt off, which was won by Pete Duffy with fifty-eight seconds on the clock.

Pete happily donated his prize back to the fund.
