A 'Celebration of Spring' took place in Castleton on Sunday with a traditional maypole dance.

After the ribbons were entwined around the maypole on the village green, groups from Castleton School of Dancing performed.

Ward councillor Billy Sheerin said: “We hope that this Celebration of Spring will become an annual event. It was certainly enjoyed by young and old alike, and the sun came out to make the day very special indeed.”

A £500 cheque was also presented on the day to the Jolly Josh charity, from fund raising at the Magic of the Musicals dancing display.

Traditionally performed on May Day, maypole dancing is believed to have originated in Roman Britain approximately 2,000 years ago. The arrival of spring was celebrated by dancing around decorated trees.

Over time, the practice developed into the tradition of weaving colourful ribbons around a pole, which is still observed today.
