Whitworth students star in school concert

Date published: 11 May 2018

Two school choirs and two bands combined to present a show at Whitworth Community High School.

Whitworth Wind Band and Seconnd Rossendale Scout Group Band played; Whitworth Community High School Choir and Britannia Primary School Choir sang, along with international opera singer Seán Ruane.

The concert, on the stage in the school’s main hall, was in front of parents and students, governors and staff.

Two students, Sam Booth and Josh Dunning, both 14, played in the Scout Band then quickly switched to join their school band. Sam plays cornet while Josh plays baritone and with the school wind band, he also played a solo.

Josh said: “I was quite nervous before it started and I was shaking but our musical director Hayley Walsh kept encouraging me and calmed me down.

“It was the first time I had ever performed a solo with the band and there were a lot of people watching. I played ‘She’s the One’.

“At the end the audience was going mental and my dad was whistling which made me smile.”

Sam said: “Josh’s solo was very nice and he did really well. At the end of the concert I also got to play a solo of ‘Let Me Entertain You’ with the wind band.”

Second Rossendale played a medley of Abba hits accompanied by the choirs from Whitworth and Britannia, who also joined forces with Seán Ruane in a rendition of ‘Any Dream Will Do’ and a rousing ‘Show Me The Way To Go Home’.

Whitworth’s choir also sang Birdie’s ‘Wings’ and Cyndi Lauper’s ‘True Colours’.
