Marvellous Mitchell makes Mayor's Awards

Date published: 09 May 2018

Hopwood Hall College student Mitchell Thompson was honoured by the Lord Mayor of Rochdale at the 2018 Mayor’s Youth Awards.

Mitchell won the Community Contribution Award for his extensive voluntary work and received his prize at a ceremony held at Rochdale’s Town Hall.

The awards recognise and celebrate the positive achievements, contributions and developments of young people across the Rochdale borough.

Alongside studying both a Skills for Life and a Horticulture course at Hopwood Hall College, Mitchell was recognised for his efforts in cleaning up his community through volunteer groups such as the Friends of Norden Jubilee Park & NEEVA.

Mitchell said of his moment in the spotlight: “It was funny seeing the Mayor, he knew exactly who I was already because I have seen him at so many of the volunteer events I have done.

“The awards night was really good. There was a great atmosphere and a lot of positive people there, I like that Rochdale puts on these awards to recognise young people’s achievements as a lot of people don’t hear about them.

“I’m really happy to have won the award, it should be helpful in future when I try to find a job after college and it’s nice to be recognised. My phone hasn’t stopped with people saying well done since the awards.

“I would like to thank the College’s Student Support Manager, Nicola Metcalfe, for nominating me. Without her doing that I wouldn’t have gained the big confidence boost I have had since being given the award.”
