The annual Middleton May Day event started with a green man procession around Jubilee Park followed by Maypole Dancing with the children of Parkfield Primary School.

Children also poured water on the green man to symbolise plants growing after the long winter.

Liz McInnes MP, who opened the event, said: “It gives me great pleasure to open the May Day festivities on this wonderful sunny day. I hope you all have a wonderful time watching the Maypole dancing and visiting the charity stalls.”

Mr Zippy once again entertained the children followed by the pipeband; there was a dance routine by children form Langley theatre workshop and a fencing demonstration.

Children were given books by Middleton Rotary Club as part of Buzzing Bee Bonanza. The club was responding to news that 40,000 children in Greater Manchester do not own a single book. Rotary provided a range of books for children to choose from.

Live music was provided by Swampdog.

Peter Shore, Middleton Round Table, said: “The weather is great which is a nice change, we are having a wonderful day with lots of children and families enjoying themselves.”
