St Helen's follows in Rochdale’s footsteps to introduce mandatory safeguarding training for taxi drivers

St Helen's is following in Rochdale’s footsteps by introducing mandatory safeguarding training for taxi drivers.

A new report from St Helen's Council says this is due to the Rochdale grooming scandal.

In February 2014, Rochdale Council were the first local authority in England to carry out mandatory safeguarding training for all existing drivers, approximately 1,600 drivers were trained over four sessions.

A Rochdale council spokesperson added: “Since then, safeguarding training has been given to all new drivers as part of a mandatory coaching session and we have provided safeguarding training packages to other local authorities.”

The green light was given to similar proposals in St Helen's on 25 April.
