Cardinal Langley comes out on top in Rochdale Schools Cup

Date published: 04 May 2018

Cardinal Langley RC High School brought home silverware in all but one of the 2018 Rochdale Schools Football Finals, hosted by Hopwood Hall College.

The Middleton based school beat Wardle Academy in two separate categories; a 5-0 victory in the Under 12s and tight 3-2 win in the Under 14s category.

Middleton Technology School also put up a strong fight, but narrowly lost 2-1 to Cardinal Langley in the Under 13s.

In the Under 15s final, Holy Family RC & CE College and Hollingworth Academy fought out the tightest contest of the day’s games. After 90 minutes and extra time, the score remained 1-1.

That meant penalties and it was Holy Family who came out on top, winning the shootout 3-1.

In the finals’ main event, Cardinal Langley beat Hollingworth Academy 2-1 to claim the Under 16s cup courtesy of a lat strike from their front man.

Mike Rudkowskyj, Secretary of Rochdale Metro Schools FA and organiser of the Rochdale Schools Finals, said of the finals: “Despite Cardinal Langley picking up a lot of the trophies, all of the teams showed great quality. Most importantly, the schools played in the right spirit and the students and enjoyed themselves along with their travelling support.

“Hopwood Hall College have been great supporters of the event once again too. Their facilities and staff have been a big help in promoting the Rochdale Schools FA’s showcase event.

“We look forward to seeing Cardinal Langley and Holy Family’s defence of their titles next year.”
