The Blayney boys Bake Off raises over £1,300 for Stand Up To Cancer

Date published: 01 May 2018

A Great British Bake Off style day hosted the Blayney boys on Saturday (28 April) has raised £1,370 for charity.

Hopwood Primary School pupils Ben, 10, and Nate, eight, with their little sister Evie, wanted to host their own Bake Off after watching the recent Stand Up To Cancer episodes.

Mum Lucy said: “The episode with the story of 11-year-old Eve, who lost her battle to cancer, was utterly heart-breaking and really caught me unaware. I sobbed, sandwiched between two little boys who weren’t quite sure what to do with me.”

Nate suggesting donating some money, and as the Blayneys logged in to add gift aid, they noticed they could host their own Bake Off. Immediately, Lucy says she was met by stereo requests.

With that, the Blayney Boys Bake Off was borne – with help from Evie, of course. After setting the date, the children worked hard designing posters, organising a raffle and painting a blank canvas on rocks, with a prize for the best design.

Lucy added: “They worked so hard and were excellent judges of the amazing creations entered for the competition. They crowned Thomas ‘Star Baker’ for his surprise cake.”

Approximately 60 people attended on the day, packing out the Blayneys ‘tiny house’. Currently, £1,370 has been raised for Stand Up To Cancer, with leftover cake donated to the Heywood scouts.

Lucy continued: “I am so proud of them for wanting to do something to help, and for all the effort they've put in, and for how much our friends and family have got behind them and made it such an incredible success.

“Cancer research and Stand Up To Cancer are causes close to our hearts as we've lost my dad and my mum in law to cancer, and we have a friend currently battling the disease. My husband Paul and I are extra proud of the boys for wanting to do something to try and make a difference.

“This is their first fundraising effort, but they are already thinking up some new ideas.”
