Man taken to hospital after tram collision

Date published: 01 May 2018

A man was taken to hospital after he was involved in a collision with a tram at Newbold Metrolink stop.

The incident occured at 9.13am on Friday morning (27 April) as the tram arrived at the stop from Rochdale.

The tram was travelling at about 30 miles per hour just before the collision as the driver was slowing down on approach to the platform.

The man was conscious, able to stand and was talking to Metrolink staff at the scene. The emergency services were called and the man was taken to hospital.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed the man was later discharged.

A review of the incident is taking place.

Chris Jackson, Service Delivery Director at KeolisAmey Metrolink (KAM), said: “We wish the man involved in the collision a speedy recovery from his injuries.

“Our driver, who had applied the brakes and sounded his horn on seeing the man approaching the side of the tram, was shaken by the incident and unable to continue with his duties that day. We have been supporting him since.

“Safety is our number one priority at KAM and all incidents involving Metrolink trams are thoroughly reviewed to see what, if anything, we can learn from events.”
