Former Knowl View head teacher jailed for assault and cruelty to children

A former head teacher at the notorious Knowl View school in Rochdale has been jailed for 20 months.

Derrick Cooper (DOB 29/10/40), of Hillberry Green, Douglas, Isle of Man pleaded not guilty to the charges after appearing at Carlisle Crown Court on Thursday (26 April).

Cooper, “who used to beat the boys until their ears bled”, was found guilty of one count of assault causing actual bodily harm, and one count of cruelty to a person under the age of 16.

The offences took place between 7 September 1977 and 28 May 1982, and between 5 September 1984 and 16 January 1987.

He received 10 months’ imprisonment for the first charge, and 10 months consecutive for the second charge.

No victim surcharge was paid as the offences occurred before 2012.
