Car smashes into Aldi store

A car smashed into the front of the Aldi store on Mellor Street, Rochdale on Monday (9 April).

A black 18 plate BMW collided with the entrance of the store at around 7pm.

Emergency services attended the scene.

Remarkably, though extensive damage has been caused to the vehicle and the store, onlookers have reported that only the driver is believed to have been injured, understood to inculde a broken an arm.

A spokesperson for the ambulance confirmed a man in his mid-30s was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary with significant injuries, including to his arm.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue said: “We were called at 6.24pm to reports of a road traffic collisionbetween a car and a shop front. We sent two fire engines from Rochdale and the technical response unit from Ashton. We were in attendance for approximately one hour, and a fire trauma technician gave first aid to the casualty before he was taken to hospital.”

A GMP spokesperson said: “We were called at 6.30pm to reports of a collision between a car and a building on Mellor Street. The ambulance and fire service were also in attendance.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident number 1860 of 09/04/18. Reports can also be made anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
