The official launch of Rochdale’s entry into the national Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Britain in Bloom competition took place on Sunday (8 April).
Members of Rochdale In Bloom and the volunteer community groups gathered outside the town hall to promote this unique opportunity. The group were joined by chef Andrew Nutter, who made a special Rochdale In Bloom cake for the launch event.
Rochdale has achieved Gold Medal status for the last two years. In November, it was announced at the regional finals in Southport that Rochdale would be representing the North West nationally in the 'Small City' category.
Roy Down, vice chairman of Rochdale In Bloom, said: ''Having Andrew on board is the icing on the cake, quite literally. We look forward to working with Andrew and Nutters Restaurant throughout the competition.''
Commenting on the launch, Nigel Morrell, Chairman of Rochdale In Bloom, said: "Ahead of us lies the biggest challenge which the team has faced, in representing Rochdale on the national stage.
"Our nomination to this prestige competition represents the culmination of seven years hard work by each and every member of our community-based group.
"The regional judges were particularly impressed with the extent and diversity of the number of groups supporting and engaging with our bid, that was a key part of our elevation to the national quest."
Reflecting on the challenge ahead for 2018, Paul Ellison said: "It is a great privilege to take part in this national contest, to meet the challenge, we have strengthened our offering by bringing forward a number of new groups and projects from across the Township.
"We are delighted to welcome to our team for 2018, Marshalls PLC as a key sponsor, their support in 2017 was very welcome, with the Norden rockery and their increased support and commitment for 2018 welcomed once more.
“The benefits of competing in these competitions is bound to have a beneficial effect on the environment in our town for residents and visitors alike.
"Poppies will also feature this year in our In Bloom efforts for the celebration of 100 years of World War One, and we even treated our Gracie to some lovely flowers.”
The RHS Britain in Bloom judges will visit the finalists in August with the winners of each category and finalists’ final score – ranging from Gold to Bronze - announced at an awards ceremony in Belfast on 19 October.
