Rochdale Environmental Action Group Great British Spring Clean

Date published: 29 March 2018

Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG) carried out their Great British Spring Clean along the banks of the Rochdale canal in Deeplish on Saturday (24 March).

The group took full advantage of the good weather to remove litter from the bank and streets surrounding the canal between Well’i’th Lane and Lock 50.

Engaging with residents and children along the way, REAG encouraged them to be more aware of the problems with rubbish and fly tipping in the area.

Joining the group was Deputy Mayor, Mohammed Zaman, who took up a litter picker and helped clean up part of the approach to Sudden Brook.

A REAG spokesman said: “We were glad that Councillor Zaman came with us as it sets an example to everyone. If the Deputy Mayor is happy to pick up litter and show some concern and pride for the area where he lives, then anyone else can and should do the same.”

The group also turned their attention to the land and car park around the Iceland store on Well’i’th Lane, a location which was still heavily littered, despite being previously reported several times.

REAG Chairwoman Christine Mathewson spoke with Darren Steele, the store manager. She said: “A commitment to keep the area clean and work closely with us has already been received from their head office - well done Iceland.

"This fulfills REAG’s ethos which is to work alongside businesses and residents to bring about a sustained change and improve the environment in Rochdale.”
