Delayed World Book Day at Whitworth still brings out the costumes

Date published: 23 March 2018

Bad weather forced World Book Day to be celebrated late at Whitworth Community High School, but it didn’t stop some amazing costumes being created.

The most popular choice of outfits were: Pink Ladies from Grease, a collection of cats and several pyjama-clad ‘Midnight Gangs’ from David Walliams’ book.

One student even used swatches of material to cover his clothing and he came as ‘50 Shades of Gray’.

Literacy Champions organised the fun day and took photographs as the staff and students arrived in their outfits before showing them around school and putting it out to a public vote.

The Literacy Champions are from Years 7 to 10 with the older students taking a leading role in organising activities. They held assemblies ahead of the day to promote it.

Year 10 Jessica Fitzpatrick-Smith said: “People think being a Literacy Champion is just about reading but it is much more and we also get to organise events and also to help the teachers. Loving literacy gets you further in life.”

The champions organised a photo booth over lunch and had a collection of props from the drama department.

Ella Lord was also successful in winning a creative writing competition that was held as part of the event.

She said: “There were different pictures and you had to write a story or create a poem.

“I picked a photograph showing a man on a bench in the snow and wrote a descriptive story of about 350 words about how his wife had died and he was thinking about her.

“I liked the freedom of being able to write what I wanted.”

Best student outfits: most creative, Millie Hart; most unusual, Madeleine Kelsey-Lyons; best joint effort, Katrina Davey and Grace Prime; most realistic, Katie Heath.

Staff Awards: best dressed, Mrs Murray, Maths; best dresses Faculty, Creativity as The Avengers.
