Clamp down on persistent problem parking at schools

Cardinal Langley School in Middleton was the focus of a clamp down on problem parking during the afternoon pick up. 

Roads, entrances to houses and bus stops were all seen to be blocked and double yellow lines were frequently ignored across two days.

The two days of action came after recent complaints from the school and concerned residents over the potentially dangerous situations being caused by persistent problem parking.

Councillor Sara Rowbotham, cabinet member for health and wellbeing and a deputy leader of the council, said: “It is really important that those collecting children from school obey parking regulations. They aren’t there to be difficult; they are there to make it safe for the children leaving school and the residents living nearby. Inappropriate parking causes disruption and the council and police will take action. Everyone can do their bit to improve the situation at schools up and down the borough by not parking illegally.”

Staff spent two afternoons speaking to motorists who were parked inappropriately and highlighted more appropriate parking areas before explaining what action will be taken, by police or traffic enforcement, if problems persist.

The council is also looking at additional traffic control measures, such as road markings, to see what improvements could be made.
