Pupils raise £1,041.00 for CAFOD World Gifts

Mrs Ansley congratulated Mr McLauchlan and Year 7 pupils in assembly for their fantastic effort in raising money for CAFOD World Gifts through the sale of Bat or Bird boxes (BOB Box) during Advent. Year 7 were the year group who raised the most. An amazing £1,041.00 was raised by St Cuthbert's in total.

The Year 9 COPE group and Mrs Rostron were also congratulated for their huge contribution in building many of the BOB boxes and making it a course work related project. Their efforts will change many lives.

PE - Year 10 Boys Football

Tuesday, 20 February saw the Under15s take on Matthew Moss in a league match at St Cuthbert's.

After a fairly even start to the game Matthew Moss started to have slightly better possession with their number 4 in central midfield standing out.

Jordoa Costa was making his debut for the team and had two good chances to score but snatched at the shots and they went wide. He then played a nice early ball through for Joe Hoyle to run onto and slide past the keeper for the lead.

Dale Aparis played a ball down the line for Jordao to chase, he left the fullback behind as he raced through on goal and scored.

Matthew Moss pulled a goal back before half time with some good play by their number 4 and their centre forward along with some poor marking by St Cuthbert's.

In the second half Harvey Holden came on for Jordao and added some more steel in the midfield. It was not long before Joao Soares gathered the ball near the halfway line and dribbled through to score a very nice goal. Matthew Moss had a good chance from a free kick but a good save by Sean Kendrick, making his debut, saw them kept to only one goal.

Shay Stansfield came on for the injured Brad Heaton and with almost his first touch set up a goal. He headed a goal kick straight back towards the net and an unmarked Joe collected it and scored his second. St Cuthbert's were now dominating the game but were quite wasteful with chances by trying to score a perfect goal or by walking it into the net.

Shay then scored after a corner was not cleared well enough and he smashed it home from near the penalty spot.

Alex Dixon had a good game in that he made some good runs, got in great positions and was frustrated by a combination of the post and the goalkeeper.

However, he passed it to Joao who the dribbled past numerous players before beating the keeper with ease to make it 6 - 1.

The match was stopped a little early as the light was fading and the result was not in doubt. A spirited show by Matthew Moss but St Cuthbert's managed to break them down and deservedly win.

Go Green for Springhill Hospice

During the holy season of Lent, we are invited to Fast, Pray and Give. In addition to supporting the Caritas St Joseph's Penny appeal who carry out so much essential work throughout the Diocese, this Lent we also wanted to show our support for some of our very local charities too.

Last Tuesday, we welcomed a very special guest to St Cuthbert's. Springy the Frog, the mascot from Springhill Hospice, together with Barbara Lloyd, Community Support Fundraiser, who joined us in the DEN for our Go Green cake and cocktail sale.

To say it was busy is an understatement!

We were delighted with the fabulous donations from staff and pupils of green cakes and biscuits to sell.

Many staff wore something green for a small donation and there was a cake raffle which was won by Mrs Cowley.

We are delighted to have raised over £150 for such a great local cause and we look forward to presenting Springhill Hospice with a cheque very soon.

Rochdale Foodbank

As part of our Lenten charitable giving, pupils and staff have been bringing in tins and packets for Rochdale Foodbank which supports so many local families in need.

Mrs Beisty's dream of seeing a tin trail from the chapel to the main school buildings became a reality thanks to the generosity of our pupils and their families.

Keith from the Foodbank was overwhelmed by the volume of food donations when he came to collect the tins last Friday. Well done everyone!
