The people of Rochdale are the stars of a new pop video featuring a famous speech by Charlie Chaplin.
The video’s director, Ian Hawkins, spent a couple of days filming people in and around the town centre. He was accompanied by band member, Terry Eves who, along with other members of the group, has strong links to Rochdale.
In a career spanning 75 years, Charlie Chaplin spoke in only a handful of films. The closing speech in The Great Dictator, a spoof on the rise of Hitler, with Chaplin as the barber-turned-dictator, Adenoid Hynkel, is the focus of Love on Love by Black Sedan.
Terry Eves said: ‘‘It’s an incredibly powerful speech.
"The theme is very much about people coming together and resisting oppression of any kind. Everyone was so supportive, allowing us to film them and trusting that our hearts were in the right place.’’
Many of those volunteering were at the Growth Centre based in Hamer, a scheme to promote good mental and physical wellbeing through outdoor activity in a green environment.
Film maker Ian Hawkins said: ‘‘The atmosphere there was so positive and supportive. It was a real pleasure to be among them all. I think we got some of our best shots down at the allotments."
The single, which is released on Friday 13 April, has already received airplay on national radio.
Black Sedan will follow it with an album in June, Adventure Lit Their Star, on Pomona Sounds.
