Heywood PCSOs to take on Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge for local scouts’ World Jamboree

Four determined PCSOs at Heywood Police Station are set to take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to help local scouts raise £12,000 for the 2019 World Scout Jamboree.

Steve McNee, Phil Bailey, Simon Gregory and Steven Brady are looking to raise as much as possible for members of Heywood Explorers to attend the 2019 World Scout Jamboree in America, which costs £4,000 per participant.

They will be undertaking the Three Peak Challenge in April, tackling the tallest mountains within each representative country: Snowdon in Wales, Scafell Pike in England and Ben Nevis in Scotland. 

PCSO McNee, who was a scout until he was 18, said: “We are attempting the challenge to raise as much money as possible to support a group of local scouts from our area in achieving their goal of raising £12,000. This will not only mean they can attend as a member of the United Kingdom contingency, but it also will help scouts from developing nations attend also.

“Heywood has nine scouts going to represent the UK, which is amazing as we only had one scout represent us at the last Jamboree in Japan in 2015.”

PCSO McNee will be joining the scouts as the adult for Rochdale and will be the overall leader for all adults and children who will be attending the Jamboree from the Pennine scouting district. Of the four adults and 36 children going, 14 children are from the borough.

The Jamboree takes place between 22 July and 2 August 2019 in West Virginia. It will see 45, 000 scouts from over 200 countries brought together for three weeks of fun and learning at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve.

All participants had to submit an application form for the Jamboree and attend a selection weekend involving lots of teamwork, problem solving and other tasks.
