The Flying Horse once again named CAMRA’s Best Pub of the Year for 2018
The Flying Horse has been named as the Rochdale, Oldham and Bury branch of CAMRA’s Pub of the Year for the second year running.
CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, aims to promote real ales and pubs across the UK. CAMRA was founded in 1971 by a few real ale enthusiasts at a time when traditional rich-flavoured ales, were being replaced by brewers producing beers with less demanding production and storing techniques.
Serving 10 cask ales and six draught ciders, the Flying Horse is open daily and is widely regarded as one of Rochdale’s premier live music venues, hosting live entertainment every weekend. The kitchen also serves traditional homemade meals, all produced using the finest locally sourced ingredients along with an additional daily specials board.
Owner Ben Boothman, said: “We were overwhelmingly voted as Rochdale, Oldham and Bury CAMRA Pub of the Year for the second time.
“The quality of the beer and how it is served is important, but we aren’t just judged on the beer, our food, décor, cleanliness, attitude, product knowledge, appearance and general demeanour is all taken into consideration.
“Winning once is good but holding onto it was always the task at hand and we did it.”
Jon Hudson, bar manager at the Flying Horse, said: “The improvement since we first won last year has been massive and it is great that everyone has really got on board with what we are doing with the ale. A huge well done to all the staff.”
Peter Alexander, chairman of Rochdale, Oldham and Bury CAMRA, said: “The Flying Horse is a great pub, with fantastic staff and brilliant beer.
“The owner, Ben Boothman, has recently refurbished the beer cellar to ensure tip top quality and has increased the number of beers sold due to demand.
“A perfect pint of real ale and a friendly welcome is assured.
“There are many excellent pubs in our area and it is a credit to the team at the Flying Horse that they have retained their title of Pub of the Year. Well done and I look forward to presenting the award soon.”
