8:53am Friday 2 March - Snow and high winds leave thousands without power

Date published: 02 March 2018

Electricity workers are struggling to reconnect supplies after snow and high winds brought down power lines across the region.

Thousands of homes have been cut off after gusts of up to 90mph were recorded at the Rakewood Viaduct near Rochdale.

Electricity North West said power outages were affecting parts of Stockport, Oldham, Preston, Blackburn, Bolton, Manchester, Carlisle and parts of Cumbria and Derbyshire.

The firm said some of their work teams have had to stop repairs until it is safe to continue.
