Butterworth Hall opened as emergency centre due to extreme weather
Date published: 01 March 2018
Butterworth Hall has been opened as an emergency centre for those being diverted off the M62 due to the extreme weather.
Approximately 40 volunteers have turned out at the hall with food and duvets despite the blizzard conditions.
A section of the M62 motorway eastbound between J21 (Milnrow) and J22 (Saddleworth) has been closed for the majority of the day, with gritters and snow ploughs working to clear the traffic.
Volunteer Samantha Howarth said: “They are asking for donations of blankets, duvets, airbeds - anything warm really for the poor people who are unable to get home tonight.”
Local Councillor Andy Kelly said: “Dave Bamford has been out chopping trees in the blizzard and we have people offering rooms for overnight stays.”
Milnrow Evangelical Church car park has been cleared and is open with 40 parking spaces.
