Whitworth Year 7s lose out on semi-final place in national competition

Date published: 27 February 2018

Footballing Year 7s at Whitworth Community High School missed out on a semi-final spot in the national ESFA Boys Under 12 PlayStation 9-a-side Small Schools’ Cup.

They got through to the final eight and faced a team from Chantry Middle School, Morpeth, Northumberland, at home.

In front of the rest of Year 7 and their parents, the team played valiantly, but the opposition proved to be the stronger side.

Striker Sam Wellington, 11, said: “About five minutes into the match they scored and then I equalised.

“Another five minutes later Jake Brearley scored and with just three minutes to the end of the first half they managed to make it 2:2.

“In the second half they went up 3:2 and we were pushing everyone forward but they got a hold of it and broke from the back; then it was 4:2.

“We were all a bit down hearted and then they got their fourth goal. We did manage to get through to the quarter finals and I am really happy that we got that far.

“We will be competing again in Year 8 and this time we hope to do even better. We will no longer be playing 9-a-side, but 11-a-side and that will be better because it is what we are used to.”
