Newlands Childer Award Winners

Kiera Anderson and Harlen Bowers made history at Newlands Primary School this year by being the first pupils to be jointly awarded the Childer Award in recognition of their achievements.

The Childer Award is an annual Rochdale wide scheme awarded by schools across the region and supported by Keith and Marilyn Fairhurst, who presented the awards to Kiera and Harlen at a special celebration assembly, with pupils, staff, families, governors and ex-governors in attendance.

Staff nominate pupils they believe should receive the award based on their progress and achievements during their time at Newlands.

And this year, two other pupils also received special nominee awards.

Head Teacher, Deborah Rogers said: “All pupils at Newlands are special to us and achieve so much in their time at our School. This makes it extremely difficult to recognise just a few from the 104 children we have.

“Congratulations Kiera and Harlen, your school community is really proud of you.”

Pupils visit the extension

Newlands Primary School, which celebrated its 10th birthday last year, is undergoing an extension that will see the school increase its capacity by 15%, providing valuable places for the local community.

The build at the Special School in Middleton, co-located with Hollin Primary, is expected to be finished by the summer, creating two new classrooms and meaning up to 16 additional pupils can be welcomed to the school in September. But pupils already attending the school have been lucky enough to visit the site while the build is in progress.

With hard hats, hi vis vest and clipboards in hand, groups of pupils and staff have been escorted around the site by Joanne James, Director at PLP Construction who have been contracted to complete the extension at Newlands as well as Springside Primary School and Redwood School.

Deborah Rogers, Head Teacher at Newlands, said: “The pupils have been intrigued by the building works so it’s been a great adventure for them to see it up close and ask questions about the work. It’s also provided some great materials for learning within the classroom.”

Chair of Governors and Local Councillor, Ray Dutton and Parent Governor, Lisa Webb recently visited the building site, saying they were impressed with the progress of the build as well as the time construction staff have been taking to engage with the pupils to inform their learning.
