Rochdale family feature on ITV’s Britain’s Brightest Family

Date published: 15 February 2018

A Rochdale family battled it out for a spot in the quarter finals on ITV’s Britain’s Brightest Family on Wednesday (14 February).

The new quiz hosted by Anne Hegerty – aka The Governess – sees 16 families take part in a knockout tournament, which sees players nominate a team member to answer the questions, as they attempt to win the title of Britain’s Brightest Family, plus the holiday of a lifetime to the NASA Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.

Pitting their wits against the Goodman family from Nottingham were the Ali family from Rochdale, 12-year-old team captain Lybah, who scored 97% in her SATS, her mum Mehnaz, who is a language expert holding an MA in animation, and aunt Rehana, a trainee solicitor who has a first class honours degree in law and criminology.

The Ali family got off to a rocky start in round one, with neither nomination knowing the answer to their first two questions. However, after an incorrect answer from the Goodmans, they gained their first point by correctly identifying the location of Tennessee on a map of the United States.

After round one, the Ali family had 10 points to the Goodmans’ 40.

In the second round, Rehana took on Sarah Goodman. After three time-outs with neither guessing any answers, the round ended with no further points for the Ali family, and an additional 20 for the Goodmans.

Both 12-year old captains Daisy-Mai and Lybah stepped forward for the numbers round. Lybah scored 10 points when her opponent incorrectly answered a question.

At the start of round four, the final individual round about IQ and logic, the Ali family had fallen behind by 70 points.

Going into the final round, with each correct answer worth 20 points, the score was 20 to 130.

Despite several correct answers in the final round, the Ali family ultimately lost with 80 points whilst their opponents reached the quarter finals with 170 points.
