Following on from the letter Rochdale Online received recently regarding LED street lights (http://www.rochdaleonline.co.uk/news-features/129/letters-to-the-editor/115929/letter-lighten-up) Oldham and Rochdale councils have a street lighting project which started in 2011.
The joint project will see 55,000 street lights, signs and bollards replaced over the next five years, providing a safer environment and a more energy efficient lighting system.
John McAuley, project manager for the Oldham and Rochdale street lighting project, said: “Around 80% of street lights in Rochdale use energy efficient light sources with a dimming function, which has allowed us to significantly reduce energy consumption and co2 emissions.
"We are already using LED lights on the replacement of illuminated boards and signs and subway lighting in the borough and we will use LED street lights more in the future, as and when the lanterns need to be replaced for maintenance purposes or new projects.”
