Kingsway Morrisons raises £1,253 for World Cancer Day

Date published: 08 February 2018

Morrisons Rochdale held a charity fundraiser and raised £1,253 for World Cancer Day on Friday 2 February.

The event, organised by Morrisons community champion Emma Pedgrift, was aimed at fundraising for Morrisons chosen charity ‘CLIC Sargent’ – the UK’s leading cancer charity for children, young people and their families with the slogan ‘Young Lives VS Cancer’.

To raise money, Morrisons staff gave £3 each to replace their usual work uniform with bright coloured clothing. As well as this, staff provided all materials for a tombola and raffle which were available to take part in on Friday and included a mixed food hamper, a beer hamper and a large homemade chocolate cake.

Morrisons bakery manager, Karen Knight, fundraised and had all her hair shaven off by ‘Hair by Sophie Claire’; a task she already completed eight years ago but had grown back to around 22 inches when she braved the shave again.

Morrisons butcher, Jay Cooney, also raised money and had both of his legs waxed.

Throughout the week staff also sold CLIC Sargent badges, wristbands and pens, with all money proceeding into the charity boxes and money tubs.

Emma has raised a total of £4,500 so far. She said: “From Monday to Saturday we had raised £1,253 but we still have more money to collect.

“A lot of this money is being used to set up homes closer to hospitals where these children are being treated for cancer, which is great because it reduces the amount of time families spend travelling to and from hospitals when they are already worn out. I know of a child who had to travel for at least 7 hours every time they visited the hospital.”

The North West fundraiser for CLIC Sargent, Joe Burns, said: “A big thanks to the Rochdale Morrisons store and to Emma, the community champion there, with just over £1,200 raised (and counting) on World Cancer Day.

“Thanks to all the staff and customers who helped collect such a great amount.”
Morrisons also said: “Thank you to everyone who banded together for CLIC Sargent and supported our fundraising activities across the country on World Cancer Day - your efforts will help our amazing charity partner support more young people.”

Emma commented: “I would like to say thank you to all the staff and customers at Morrisons Rochdale who made this happen. Without their help and their taking part we would not raise as much money as we do.”

Staff at Morrisons Rochdale decided on CLIC Sargent as their chosen charity in February 2017, meaning this is the charity they will continue to fundraise for over three years.
