Holocaust Memorial Day Commemoration

Date published: 01 February 2018

Holocaust Memorial Day Commemoration was held at Heywood Civic Centre.

The event is always held on or near to the 27 January, the date of the liberation of Auschwitz.

The Stone in the Memorial Gardens was re-dedicated by Mayor Ian Duckworth, his chaplain, Revd Richard Bradley and Henry West, MBE, who escaped persecution by coming to Britain 80 years ago.

Councillor Neil Emmott spoke poignantly of his visit to Auschwitz and was particularly moved by seeing the suitcases with the names and addresses of people who were murdered there.

Candles were lit as Katie Geelan of Fiddlestix played the theme from Schindler’s List on violin.

Sarah Mahmood, Member of the Youth Parliament said: “I learned lots.”
