Students learn about recycling from award-winning local company

Date published: 24 January 2018

Students visited an award-winning business to help them better understand their chosen topic recycling and the environment.

Five members of the Year 7 Council at Whitworth Community High School called into Anglo Recycling in Whitworth where they had the company’s history and products explained to them.

Although both Alice Warrington, 11, and Elysia Wild, 12, had walked past the company on Tong Lane many times neither knew what the business did.

Alice said: “They explained how they take the off cuts of carpets that are normally thrown away and they recycle them to make a new product.”

Elysia said: “We were shown around the factory and saw the different machinery used to make felt and carpet.”

The students were impressed with how the company was able to turn pieces of carpet that would normally be discarded and make them into a new product.

As part of their topic they are also looking at the environment and are seeking to raise awareness among follow students about the importance of recycling everything possible at school and minimising waste.

Chairman Simon Macaulay said: “I was impressed by the young people who had each made a personal commitment to improve their school by reducing litter around the site.

“One student mentioned that she had been shocked by Blue Planet 2 and the amount of polythene in the oceans.

“They were a real credit to their school – asking loads of intelligent and incisive questions.

"It was a fun afternoon and, I think, enjoyed by all.”

Anglo Recycling is celebrating its 80th year in business next year.
