'Women of Freedom' exhibition at Sudden Community Centre opened

The first ‘Women of Freedom’ exhibition at Sudden Community Centre was opened by Councillor Sameena Zaheer on Saturday.

Milkstone and Deeplish ward councillor Sameena Zaheer addressed a group of local community members, explaining the importance of the exhibition by Multicultural Resource Centre, which highlights the roles of women who dedicated their lives to the Pakistan independence movement in 1947.

She said: “This project is to highlight the facts of which many of us still remain unaware. The historical significance behind the struggles borne by some of our prominent leaders, particularly the female figureheads of Pakistan will inspire our young people.”

The exhibition was created by two groups of women, who were supported in creating artwork and stories by an artist. They also worked with a sessional worker to develop their knowledge and understanding of the role of women in the freedom movement.

Poetry was also recited in two languages on the day by author Nughmana Kanwal Sheikh.

The project aims to encourage young women to explore the history and significant roles played by feminist leaders of Pakistan, build the confidence and self-esteem of local women and provide an opportunity for the wider community to explore unknown heritage.

The exhibition will remain at the centre until Saturday 3 February.
