Hopwood Hall College Military Day
Volunteers from the Bury and Bolton Army Careers centres took over Hopwood Hall College for a two day event to work with students looking to join the military.
The visit was an opportunity for local students to get a taste of what it takes to work in one of the world’s top armed forces.
Students were taught the basics about military equipment and put through role playing tasks to simulate the level of trust and team work required when serving their country in the field.
Some of the students pitted themselves against each other in a foot race on the college’s grounds, carrying with them a soldier’s standard field pack and heavy machine gun.
Lia Bottomley, one of the students, said: “I had a lot of fun with my friends. I am not certain on what I want to do after college just yet, so learning about a career in the army this way has definitely helped me get a better of idea of what is expected of you if you do choose to serve.
“Getting to speak about the army staffs' experiences face-to-face whilst learning how to operate a heavy machine gun is not something you get to do in class.”
