Pledges to help end violence against women

The council and its partners have pledged their support for the White Ribbon Campaign, which aims to put a stop to violence against women.

Staff and visitors to Number One Riverside, Rochdale, were encouraged to do their part by pledging never to commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women.

More than 100 people signed a 6ft white ribbon in support of the campaign and 300 white ribbon badges were given out. Information and advice was also available from support services in the borough.

Statistics show that in England and Wales:

• Two women are murdered by their partner or ex-partner every week.
• 50,000 women contact rape crisis every year.
• 73% of women who are assaulted know their male attacker.

Last year the borough of Rochdale saw over 4,000 reports of domestic violence and abuse incidents.

In 2016 the council gained White Ribbon Status for its commitment to supporting the aims of the campaign. Since then the council has launched new emergency accommodation and support services for victims and children affected by domestic abuse and launched a behaviour change course for men who want to improve their relationships.

Councillor Janet Emsley, the council’s cabinet member for neighbourhoods, community and culture, said: “Everyone has a crucial role to play in creating a culture where male violence, abuse and harassment against women is simply unacceptable. We want our residents to take a stand against gender violence and share this important message across their workplaces, schools, communities and families, so we can put a stop to abuse.

“Unfortunately, this type of abuse is still happening in our borough and for victims it can be an extremely scary and lonely experience, so I want to assure people that if you need them, support and services are available to help you stay safe.”

During the 16-day campaign the council and partners will be raising awareness across the borough about what abuse is, how to report it and what support is available as well as running a lunch and learn session for frontline staff on the Freedom Programme, a free and confidential programme for any women who wants to know more about domestic abuse.

Although the White Ribbon Campaign is focussed around male violence against women, services and support are available for male victims of domestic abuse in the borough of Rochdale.
