Residents in Newhey have got together to try and "halt the destruction" of Coronation Lodges behind Shaw Road in Newhey.
The Victorian fishing lodges are a haven for local wildlife, fish and trees.
Local campaigner Dave Bamford along with councillors Andy Kelly and Irene Davidson took up the fight when residents were alarmed to see bulldozers and diggers arrive on sight and start filling in the heritage pools one morning.
Mr Bamford, who funded the printing of the petition, said: “It was quite something to see how the local community responded. The reaction was really fast and that shows you just how strongly local people feel.”
Councillor Kelly added: “In fairness to council officers, they issued a stop notice to the developer almost immediately and they deserve praise for this.
“The fear locally however is that retrospective planning will be issued as the work has started.
“We will be handing the signatures over to planning officer at the start of December."
