Middleton Christmas lights switch on

Date published: 21 November 2017

Middleton Gardens were transformed into a winter wonderland on Saturday (18 November) for the annual Christmas Lights Switch On.

Hundreds of people visited Middleton Gardens as the Christmas lights were switched on by celebrity guest Samia Longchambon (Coronation Street’s Maria Connor) who she was joined on stage by The Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale, Councillor June West, and of course, Santa and his Elves.

The community stage was jam-packed with live performances and entertainment from 12pm until 6.30pm, including Langley Theatre Workshop, Middleton Brass Band, Middleton Pop Stars, Tracing Steps, Merlin's Magic Show, TV talent and Angie Mack glow show.

A family fun fair took place throughout the day with rides for all ages, and Santa and his Elves visited many times during the day and gave out selection boxes to children and had photos taken with the crowd.

A small selection of mulled wine and mince pies were on offer from Middleton Round Table, plus more fantastic refreshments and festive stalls. A free selfie booth provided the perfect souvenir of the day for people to take home.

The Christmas Lights Switch On event finished in style with a colourful display of fabulous fireworks.

The family-friendly event, organised by Middleton Town Centre Management, has taken place annually for the last seven years and aims to aid Middleton Town Centre in becoming a destination for leisure and recreation as well as shopping.
