Attempted rape on Richard Street, Rochdale

Date published: 19 November 2017

A man attempted to rape a 29-year-old woman on Richard Street, Rochdale in the early hours of Saturday morning (18 November).

The woman had been walking on the street when she was approached by the man who made advances towards her. When she refused, he grabbed her bag and attempted to rip open her jeans.

The victim screamed loudly and the offender fled.

The offender is described as an olive skinned man in his late teens or early twenties, around five foot five inches tall, with dark thick hair which is shaved at the side.

He was wearing blue jeans, a blue and white long sleeved top and spoke with an Eastern European accent.

Detective Constable Charles Stewart of GMP’s Rochdale borough, said: “This man’s behaviour is despicable, I cannot imagine how terrified the victim must have felt in this situation.

“The victim has been very brave, not just in scaring the offender off, but by coming forward and reporting it to police.

“If you recognise the description of the offender and have information that could help us identify who he is, then I’d ask that you please get in touch with us.

“Similarly, if you heard a disturbance or saw something that could be significant to this investigation, then share what you know.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 285 of 18/11/17. Reports can also be made anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
