Eight green flags flying across the borough

Green flags were raised in eight parks and green spaces across the borough on Tuesday (31 October).

The green flags are a mark of excellence, awarded to parks or areas which are defined as world class spaces that boast the highest possible environmental standards, are beautifully maintained and have excellent visitor facilities.

Awarded in July this year, the borough picked up its highest number of green flags to date, with two new parks - Jubilee and Hopwood - achieving green flag status for the first time.

The parks and green spaces also include Rochdale Memorial Gardens, Packer Spout and Broadfield Park, Queens Park and Hare Hill Park, Milnrow Memorial Park, Middleton Cemetery and Truffet Park.

Flags were raised by councillors, with members of Rochdale Borough Council’s environmental management team and volunteers from the Friends groups who have worked alongside the Council to help achieve these results.

Councillor Neil Emmott, the council’s cabinet member for housing and environment, said: "We were delighted to receive eight Green Flag Awards this year, two more than last year, despite times of austerity. This is testament to how hard our staff and volunteers work to maintain our parks and green spaces to such a high standard and reflects our commitment to creating a cleaner, greener borough for our residents to enjoy.”
