The Borough of Rochdale has lost around 200 police officers since 2010 - Greater Manchester Police has lost £180M in police funding, leading to the significant decrease in police numbers.

  • In 2010, there were 8,148 police and 842 PCSO’s patrolling Greater Manchester’s streets.
  • By March of 2016 the number of police officers had been slashed by 23 per cent to just 6,297 – far more than the national average.
  • The number of PCSOs fell by 11 per cent to 748.

In the past 12 months, there has been an increase in various types of crime across Greater Manchester, including a 30% increase in victim-based crime (which includes violent crime, domestic abuse and sexual offences), a 63% increase in domestic abuse, a 44% increase in sexual offences, and a 53% in hate crime.

Additionally, violent crime has increased by 60% with an increase of 24% in those violent offences involving injury, burglary has increased by 19% and robbery by 54%.

The Council has also instructed the Chief Executive, Steve Rumbelow, to write to the Home Secretary, Amber Rudd, to demand the government provides adequate resources in order that a properly funded Greater Manchester Police service can restore police numbers, keep residents safe and be able to respond to the "increasing demands and threats our communities face".
