Height of former Dexine Rubber chimney to be reduced

Date published: 04 October 2017

Permission has been granted to lower the height of a chimney at the former Dexine Rubber Mill in Spotland from 40 metres to 15 metres.

Council officer's recommendation was to repair the landmark as ‘mill chimneys are becoming an increasingly scarce feature of the industrial landscape’.

However, councillors on the Planning and Licensing Committee gave permission at a meeting on Monday.

The request was called in by Spotland and Falinge councillors Cecile Biant and Wendy Cocks as ‘the second biggest issue in our ward in terms of requests from residents to get it cleared or used’.

It was also noted that the impact of the site is ‘devastating’ to the community as the mill and chimney are obviously in a poor condition.

There is also another chimney and mill within 100 metres of the site which is in reasonable condition, and that mill is occupied by businesses.
