Heritage Lottery Fund backs the Kashmiri Lives Project

Date published: 26 September 2017

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded a grant to Crescent Community Radio to carry out a one-year oral history project with the Kashmiri community in Greater Manchester.

The project, called ‘Kashmiri Lives’, has been made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, and will bring Kashmiris young and old together to exchange their memories of migration and their experiences of living in the UK.

Thirty interviews will be conducted with members of the community across three generations.

Faheem Chishti, Project Manager, said: “We are really pleased to have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund to help record, share and preserve the stories of the Kashmiri community in Greater Manchester.”

In addition, volunteers are being actively recruited to help deliver the project.

These volunteers will gain new and transferable skills in oral history, community research, and media content production along the way.

If anybody is interested in volunteering or wants to share their story please contact Shams Rehman Project on 07500 135 602.

The project will be launched at Apna Ghar in Rochdale at 11.00am-12.00pm, 2 October.
