Milnrow and Newhey councillor Neil Butterworth is campaigning to get the troublesome Bethany Lane rat run closed off.
Councillor Butterworth took up the campaign to tackle the problem after listening to the concerns of local residents.
They say the problem is getting worse and needs sorting before there is a fatal road traffic accident.
Councillor Butterworth said: “Once residents approached me with their concerns I had to act to get the problem sorted.
"One resolution could be to get the lane closed off, say for a six-month period to assess the impact it could have on local traffic.
“It may not be the final solution, but we need to look at as many options as possible to ease the congestion for the poor residents who have to put up with this nuisance on a daily basis.
“I appreciate that all drivers are doing is finding the fastest way to get home, but this should not be at the expense of the affected residents.”
