Residents across the borough have been commended as recycling rates hit the highest levels ever at 58.7%.
This increase – recorded during the summer - was driven in particular by residents putting food waste in their brown bin or caddy rather than the general dark green waste bin, following a campaign earlier in the year. Food and garden waste increased by 30% to both last year and the previous month.
Councillor Neil Emmott, the council’s cabinet member for housing and environment, said: “What an achievement for our borough! We’re delighted that residents are continuing to embrace recycling in this way and really looking to work alongside us to create a cleaner, greener borough.”
Just three years ago Rochdale was one of the worst performing Borough’s in the North West with a recycling rate averaging just 37%. After an incredible turn around the recycling rate average now sits at 53% putting the Borough in the top five amongst other Local Authorities in the North West.
