Film-maker Gary Jay publishes debut book about notorious ‘Manchester Pusher’

Date published: 12 September 2017

Rochdale film-maker Gary Jay is trying his hand at a new venture, following the publication of his debut book, ‘Were they pushed or did they fall?’

The book explores some of the theories that revolve around the case of the notorious 'Manchester Pusher', and similar cases from other countries including the USA, India and the Netherlands.

The idea of a potential serial killer arose following a spate of unexplained deaths in the Manchester waters. Dozens of bodies have been recovered from the city’s canals since 2007, and though the cause of death for the majority have been established by police, 28 deaths still remain unexplained. Greater Manchester Police has said that there is no evidence to support the theory.

In 2015, Gary filmed ‘Curiosity – Hunt for Manchester’s Serial Killer’, investigating the deaths and concept of the murderer. In a similar vein, Channel Four aired their own documentary, ‘Manchester’s Serial Killer?’, the following year.

Speaking at the time, Gary said: “Everyone knows that there is something strange going on. I’m not trying to be a hero, I just think that there’s a chance of finding something.

“Rumours of a serial killer are obviously going to generate interest. There’s no saying that there even is one, but maybe, just maybe, I’ll be proved right.”

'Were they pushed or did they fall?' is available for purchase on Kindle.
