Youth Parliament presentation to Council Cabinet

Date published: 12 September 2017

Rochdale’s Youth Assembly was given an A* by councillors for the presentation they gave last week’s informal cabinet meeting.

The youngsters were knowledgeable and confident as they outlined their manifesto commitments.

Mental health awareness and support, affordable transport, GCSE resits and bullying were their four main priorities for the coming year.

They then went on to outline the campaigns they are currently running to support this manifesto.

The meeting was "particularly impressed" with the Assembly’s clear and concise vision of what help the council and partners could give them to deliver their aims

The last slide made the point that the young are always referred to as ‘the future’. They asserted that while true, they are also ‘the now’ and as such can contribute to society now.

Council leader Richard Farnell said: “What a brilliant and inspirational presentation it was. I made a commitment that we would find some funding for them from the dividend we get for our share of Manchester Airport. I can see that this will be money well spent.

“I find it so reassuring to know that the borough’s youngsters on the Assembly are such competent and intelligent young adults.

“I completely accept what they pointed out in that last slide; they are not just ‘the future’ they are indeed ‘the now’ and should be treated accordingly.
