Castleton Swimming Pool has been officially re-opened following a community asset transfer of the baths to Crewe Industrial.

It is a remarkable turnaround for the historic building after its doors were locked for safety reasons in December 2016 after Legionella had been found in its shower system.

Since an eleventh-hour rescue package was secured, a group of staff from Crewe Industrial have been working round the clock to breathe new life into the pool, which is mainly used by a number of swimming clubs and schools.

The baths, which first opened to the public in 1910, will now be renamed Castleton Health and Leisure Centre and feedback from the community about public swimming times is being sought via an online survey.

Castleton Councillor Billy Sheerin, who worked alongside ward colleagues Councillors Aasim Rashid and Jean Hornby to help save the baths, said: “It is just wonderful for the local community and a real boost for Castleton. I can not thank Nick enough for his time, energy and investment in the project. He has ensured the pool can be enjoyed by generations to come. I am absolutely thrilled.”

Nick Crewe said: “I simply could not let this famous old pool, at the heart of the Castleton community for 100 years, close to the public. The pool is a fantastic facility which is going to be even better when the refurbishments are finished. This is a real tonic for people of all ages in Castleton and beyond. Thanks to everyone who has helped to make my vision a reality.”
