Just the ticket - discounted travel card launched

Date published: 06 September 2017

Half-price bus tickets for 16 to 18-year-olds have been rolled out in Greater Manchester, just in time for the start of the new college term.

Rochdale Borough Youth Cabinet played a role in getting discounted travel card on the road - transport costs for young people across Greater Manchester is one of the issues Rochdale’s Youth Cabinet pressed GM Mayor Andy Burnham on.

Councillor Donna Martin, cabinet member for children's services, said: "This is a great initiative for young people. It really shows how young people can get their voices heard and are making a positive difference for generations to come. They should be very proud of the work they have done on the cost of travel."

Mr Burnham, said: "One of my key manifesto pledges was to provide free travel to our city region's young people. The launch of this product signifies a major step towards realising this ambition so I am absolutely delighted that it is now available.

"Whether for school, college or training or to spend time with family and friends, it is now easier and cheaper for those aged between 16 and 18 to get around. By reducing the cost of bus travel we are enabling our young people to more easily access work and leisure opportunities, training, education and skills."

Cards must be applied for via the 'Get Me There' website:
